Those heading for the city centre should follow the signs for the Albert
Dock and central tourist attractions which direct motorists along the
A5080, known to locals as Edge Lane (Drive).
The signposted directions are generally good. However, in attempt to
give further clarification, here is more detail. The mile distances are
approximate and based on the distance from the traffic lights under the
fly-over at the end of the M62.
For the first 2.4 miles, you carry along the same road, passing at:
1.0 mile, MacDonald's and Deep Pan Pizza; 1.4 miles, Marconi/GPT factory;
1.7 miles (on the right) Devonshire House Hotel. At 2.4 miles, there is
a set of traffic lights where traffic for the Albert Dock is directed
right along Hall Lane.
At 2.8 miles you come to traffic lights. There is a church on one side
of the road and a post office on the other. Carry straight on and at 2.9
miles the road veers to the left and downhill. You pass (on the left)
at 3.2 miles a BP garage. At 3.4 miles, there is a major set of traffic
lights, Norton Street and the National Express coach station. Carry straight
on.
Then there is another set of traffic lights, in front of the sandy-coloured
TGWU building. Carry straight on downhill to (at 3.7 miles) another major
set of traffic lights.
Note as you go downhill that traffic for the city centre and the Birkenhead
tunnel is directed into the left-hand lane so it can turn left at the
lights. Traffic for the Albert Dock and the Wallasey tunnel needs to be
in one of the right-hand lanes. At this major set of lights at 3.7 miles,
traffic for the Albert Dock turns right.
However, after turning right, try to get in one of the left-hand lanes
because at 3.8 miles you need to turn left at a set of traffic lights
into Leeds Street. This is a dual carriageway.
At 4.4 miles, at a set of traffic lights, you take the second left.
This leads on to the waterfront dual carriageway. You will see the Crowne
Plaza Hotel and the Liver Building on your right. Carry along this dual
carriageway, officially known as The Strand.
At 5.0 miles, there is a major set of traffic lights. At 5.1 miles,
you should be in the right-hand lane for the turning into the Albert Dock.
Alternatively at this point, you can turn left and left again into the
city centre shopping area.
Carry further on along the dual carriageway for the Youth Hostel (on
the left, after the Baltic Fleet pub) the Campanille and Dolby hotels,
which are both on the right. Liverpool Marina is even further on.
If you do enter the Albert Dock at 5.0 miles, there is a small pay and
display car park on the left. It is likely to be full so follow the road
round to the left. At the end, turn right. Here is a small pay and display
car park. But if you carry on and turn left at the end, there is a huge
free car park.
