BY COACH

NATIONAL Express runs coach services to Liverpool from
around 100 towns and cities in Britain. National
Express is the market leader. However a rival service has been set up by megabus.com offering tickets as cheap as £1 (more information further below). National Express has responded with special offers. In both cases, the journey by coach takes around five hours or more.

NATIONAL EXPRESS
Buses leave LONDON Victoria bus station (ten minutes walk from London Victoria train station) for Liverpool six times a day. The journey tends to take around five
hours. A standard return costs between £?? and £??.
But at times there are special, cheaper offers, with
single "Fairground" tickets for £5 or even £1 being
offered in 2005.

There is also an overnight service, but the coach
stops for around 30 minutes at Digbeth bus station,
Birmingham, at around 2.30am, just as local nightclubs
are emptying. The editor has used the overnight bus,
witnessed some unpleasant scenes at Digbeth on several
occasions and consequently does not use the overnight
service anymore.

From Manchester Airport (Terminal 2 and Terminal 1)
National Express operates eight services a day to
Liverpool. Phone 08700 100735 or 08705 808080. CHECK@

The coach station used by National Express is a
modern, purpose-built facility at Norton Street, which
is on the fringe of the city centre; possibly a little
extra care needs to be taken in this area. However it
is only 150 yards from Lime Street train station.
There is a taxi rank at the bus station.
If you are walking into the city centre, it is perhaps
best to walk to the dual carriageway, and turn left.
After 30 yards, you should come to the bottom of
London Road. You will see the Empire Theatre and, on
the right, the imposing St George's Hall. Cross London
Road and walk straight past the Empire Theatre along
Lime Street, and carry straight on.
